The Pittsburgh Stars?

I wonder if Pittsburgh sports fans realize how lucky they've been to have the chance to root for some of the greatest athletes to compete in the world of sports. Since the 1970's when Pittsburgh sports dug deep roots fans have enjoyed witnessing the following players wearing the colors of their favorite Pittsburgh team. Here are just a few.

1. Roberto Clemente-tremendously gifted athlete and a true humanitarian.

2. Willie Stargell-power hitting firstbaseman/outfielder and a feared home run hitter.

3. Mario Lemieux-imagine the numbers he would have produced if he wasn'td forced to battle back problems and cancer?

4. Jaromir Jagr-there was a time when he was beloved by Pittsburgh fans. Remember that goal he scored in game one of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals against Chicago? He came off the half wall, beat three guys and then Ed Belfour to begin the comeback.

5. Ron Francis-a great player who's stills and contributions to the Penguins two Stanley Cups are overshadowed by Lemieux.

6. Terry Bradshaw-Big and strong with a powerful arm and four Super Bowl trophies.

7. Franco Harris-Quickly captured the city's imagination with his rookie season. The love affair never ended, even when he left for Seattle.

8. Joe Greene-The heart and soul of the Steel Curtain.

9. Dave Parker-There was a time when he was considered the best player in baseball. A five-tool star who could run, hit, hit for power, and throw.

10. Tony Dorsett-Homegrown star at Hopewell and then Pitt.

Eight of the ten are hall of fame athletes in their sport. Jagr will someday be honored by the NHL and if Jim Rice is in Coooperstown, Dave Parker should be too.
