O.K. it's only three games deep; the season still has 159 games to play; but for this franchise taking two out of the first three in St. Louis to open the season is big. Anytime Pittsburgh can beat up on the brilliant Tony LaRussa, I'll take it.
The Pirates rebounded from Tuesday's whipping to beat the Cardinals 7-4. Zach Duke picked up the win benefitting from a 17-hit offensive effort. Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson both had four hits. Brandon Moss three , and Nyjer Morgan and Ryan Doumit two apiece. Nate McLouth picked up his first hit of the season with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
For much of the last three years opposing hitters have knocked around Duke as if his starts were t-ball games. Wednesday night he was more than effective allowing three runs, one earned, and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. He registered four strikeouts including one of Albert Puljos in the first. The win is Duke's second on the road in the last two years.
Notes: Through three games Sanchez is hitting .571, Wilson .462 and Morgan has six hits. Matt Capps is two for two in save opportunites. Best line of the St. Louis broadcast came from color commentator the Mad Hungarian, Al Hrbosky who said of Adam and Andy LaRoche's father Dave, "So he pitched for four big league clubs...and the Cubs." Nice.
