Paul Maholm delivered his second consecutive strong outing as the Pirate defeated Cincinnati 10-2 Saturday afternoon at the Great American Ballpark. Maholm allowed one run on three hits in seven innings in winning his first game of the season. He retired the first 11 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until Brandon Phillips singled with two out in the fourth inning.
Nate Mclouth got it going offensively with a two-run homer in the first inning, his second of the season and second in three games. They added two more in the fourth when Jack Wilson doubled and scored a double by Brandon Moss. Nyjer Morgan tripled home Moss making it 4-0. Morgan had three hits, scored twice, and is now hitting .391 through five games.
Maholm allowed a run to the Reds in the seventh on an infield groundout by Jay Bruce making the score 5-1. The Pirates blew it open in the ninth with back-to-back homeruns-a grand slam by Ryan Doumit and a solo shot by Adam LaRoche-making the score 10-1. Cincinnati added the game's final run in the bottom of the night of Jesse Chavez.
The Pirates and Reds meet again tomorrow when Ian Snell faces Adam Harang at 1:10 p.m.
