The Penguins finally grab hold of a playoff birth with a 6-4 win at Tampa Bay Tuesday night. The victory pushed the Pens point total to 95. The worst they can do is finish in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. If the playoffs started today they'd open as the number six seed and face Martin Broduer and the New Jersey Devils.
Pittsburgh had trouble establishing its forecheck in the first period, but got it going in the second. The Penguins scored three times, two of them Sidney Crosby power play goals,taking a 3-0 lead after two. They jumped up 4-0 early in the third, but then things got interesting. Tampa Bay scored three goals in just over five minutes. Petr Sykora's 300th career goal made it 5-3. Jeff Halpern's second goal for the Bolts and Jordan's Staal empty-netter finished the scoring.
With two goals, Crosby now has 101 points, the third time in his career he's reached the 100-point mark. Evegni Maklin picked up two assists to increase his league-leading point total to 110 two ahead of Washington's Alexander Oveckin. Both players have two games remaining.
The Penguins play their final home game of the regular season Thursday against the Islanders. Saturday they finish the regular season at Montreal.
